Yes, today it is 10 years, and more then 100 000 photos, ago since me and good friend Bård Løken ( and later my mentor)went out to try to capture the northern lights from the expected, massive solar storm this evening. It even has its own name, The Halloween storm.
I borrowed Bårds Canon Powershot G5 and we drove out to a dark valley north of Tromsø.
It already started before we left and the whole thing was extremely exciting. After I got the settings from Bård, I framed it as best as I could and fired the first exposure I ever had of the lights.
WOW, the photo who came up the lcd screen was unbelievable.
Shortly speaking, this evening and night has always been the best experience and even if we have had great northern lights later, non of them can beat this night. At least this was the best show for me. When I read on the net…”wow..this was the best show ever”..I just have to smile and think “maybe it is for you, but for us who experienced late October 2003…well…nope”. When I talk about experience here, I´m talking about the northern lights of course :)
In fact, This night we could easily see with the naked eyes that the snow was coloured red and the where all the other colours except the green one.
Here are the photos from that night. Even if the quality is not that good( this was in the early age of the digital world and 5Mp), I hope you can feel the power of the majestic Aurora Borealis
